William Dorsey was born in 1942 and is a 1960 graduate of the Famous Artist Course, Westport, Connecticut. As he shares his background and talents with a collector or just an observer, one realizes the true depth of his genius. Some of this genius may be proudly inherited from an impressive lineage of inventors and pioneers. William is currently a California oil painter of the plein-air genre and is best known for his western landscapes, vistas of Santa Barbara and Carmel, and his Alaska landscapes.
The artist's studio sits on a property that has been owned by the Dorsey family for more than four decades. The beautiful hills of Ojai serve as a constant inspiration to the painter. Dorsey prefers to work under natural light and has constructed elaborate skylights to provide the optimum daylight painting conditions within his studio. His main influence and inspiration was Sydney Laurence and the early California Impressionists. His paintings have a classic appeal, reminiscent of many turn-of-the-century painters.
Dorsey travels extensively, painting as he travels, and has for 30 years. He has painted, shown, and published in: Stowe, Vermont; Taos, New Mexico; Sun Valley, Idaho; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; as well as California and Alaska. As a nationally recognized twentieth-century California painter, Dorsey has had work in auctions alongside early California Masters of plein-air painting. Premier collectors of California art own his paintings.
"William B. Dorsey, artist, homesteader, pilot, fisherman, inventor, composer, etc. My father went to Harvard, my mother went to Wellesley, my brother went to Berkeley, and my sister went to Smith. I went to Alaska in a plane I bought for $1,200.00." Artist rendition of his resume.
