Born in Seoul, South Korea in 1974, Zin Lim received a B.F.A. in Environmental Design from Hong Ik University, Seoul in 2000. After graduation, Zin Lim moved to San Francisco where he attended the Academy of Fine Art University, receiving his second B.F.A. in 2003 and an M.F.A. in 2006 with a focus on oil painting. The first half of his Masters studies was dedicated to the development of a solid technique in realism. (Zin Lim also continues to work in expressive and abstract techniques and believes that the expressive and abstract techniques compliment the realism. His semi-abstract figures and landscapes are done in these techniques.)
Zin Lim had dedicated his time in developing the synergy necessary to marry realism, the abstract and expressionism and create solid artwork grounded in technique and his personal philosophy, while at the same time staying true to his heart. His figurative pieces are a "process of communication between an object/subject, the canvas, and me. The goal of my work is revealing 'being' which is identified by setting up relations among these three subjects. The identity is no immutable but is definied in relation to external factors, by the connection between them and the constant change that is expected in life."
